About Me

My photo
I'm a reader who enjoys posting comments and recommendations about the books I read. You will not find a synopsis with my recommendations because you can just click on the book title for a link to www.goodreads.com for a synopsis and reviews by other readers. I prefer the 3 Reason format: the reason I chose to read it; the reason I liked (or disliked) the book; and the reason I recommend it.

The PoetThe Poet by Michael Connelly
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Poet is a thriller. I usually read cozy mysteries so there were about three times I had to find the end of the chapter before I read more because Connelly made me feel anxious and concerned for his characters.

I highly recommend to adult readers who still leave the light on when necessary.

Curious Folks Ask: 162 Real Answers on Amazing Inventions, Fascinating Products, and Medical MysteriesCurious Folks Ask: 162 Real Answers on Amazing Inventions, Fascinating Products, and Medical Mysteries by Sherry Seethaler
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book was free when I downloaded it to my Nook. This is the second book I read by this author.

This is the type of general science I enjoy reading. Seethaler explains what I need to known in a concise, easy-to-remember format.

I recommend it for all readers.

Fodor's Germany, 26th EditionFodor's Germany, 26th Edition by Fodor's Travel Publications Inc.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I chose to pack Fodor's Germanybecause this guide had information about places not mentioned in Rick Steves' Germany 2013.
My husband and I were on Trafalgar Tour's Cost Saver, Highlights of Germany for two weeks plus we visited Speyer on our own. This guide was useful during planning before we left, and it was useful to guide us to attractions instead of shopping or eating during free times.

I used this book every day of our trip. I often tore pages from the book so the information of the day could fit into my pocket.

Priced to Move (The Shop-Til-U-Drop Collection #1)Priced to Move by Ginny Aiken
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Priced to Move was free when I downloaded it to my Nook from BN.com.

I read it quickly which may be why I found it entertaining and other reviewers found things they did not like about the book. The Christian aspect worked fine with these characters, without being overdone. The book fits more in the romance genre within a cozy mystery niche than Christian fiction.

It is an entertaining book for readers who prefer their romance with a cozy mystery.

Emperors' ClothesEmperors' Clothes by Catherine McGuinness
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Emperors' Clothes was free when I downloaded it to my Nook.

This book was written by a former Human Resources person. I recognized some of the neurotic and sociopathic traits she writes about from my own observations of upper management during their corporate regime changes. I think the characters hit too close to home for me to enjoy this book, even as a satire or black comedy.

HeartfireHeartfire by Karen Rose Smith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Heartfire was free when I downloaded it to my Nook.

I enjoyed this romance between Tessa and Max. There are some descriptive scenes of their passion but it is still PG-13, or even PG.

Heartfire is an entertaining romance for readers who prefer this genre.

Mobile DNA: Finding Treasure in JunkMobile DNA: Finding Treasure in Junk by Haig H. Kazazian Jr.
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Mobile DNA was free when I downloaded it to my Nook. I hoped this book was written for a general audience interested in the topic. This was not the case, despite clever chapter titles. It is an excellent overview of the scientific topic. I recommend it to readers who have more knowledge of this topic than I did.

Antrax (Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, #2)Antrax by Terry Brooks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Antrax is the twenty-third book I read in my project of reading the Shannara books in their chronological order. My number count is different from the chronological list in Goodreads because I included three new short ebooks.

Our group of explorers search for ancient books of magic which are protected by Antrax. While I read the book, I wondered what Brooks might be thinking about e-books vs. hardcover books, about digital storage in our libraries, and about artificial intelligence.

This is the second book of "The Voyage of Jerle Shannara," and I recommend it for fans of the series.

On Sparrow HillOn Sparrow Hill by Maureen Lang
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I downloaded this ebook to my Nook, it was free from BN.com. I appreciate the opportunity to read a new-to-me author.

I liked how two love stories are told by this author. Rebecca Seabrooke is attracted to her employer Quentin. When she finally admits Quentin likes her too, she can still justify her reasons why this relationship will not work. The story of Berrie and Simon McFarland is told as Rebecca transcribes historical letters. I like the way Lang introduces the Christian elements into the stories for it comes as part of the characters. I did not feel this author was preaching to her readers instead of developing her characters as happens in too much mediocre Christian fiction. Lang may have written the supporting character Dana a bit too shrill when the topic was fragile x.

I recommend this book for all readers of romance.

Ilse Witch (Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, #1)Ilse Witch by Terry Brooks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ilse Witch is the twenty-second book I read as a part of my quest to read the Shannara books in their chronological order. It has been on our home library shelf for thirteen years, puchased by my husband who prefers to wait to read the books of a series once the author completes the series.

The last book I read, Talismans of Shannara only received a three-star rating from me, and I was in no hurry to start the next trilogy. This book is back up to four-stars for I liked this generation of characters and the airship battles.

Ilse Witch is a good start of a Shannara trilogy for a first time reader and an enjoyable read for fans of the Shannara world.
