About Me

I'm a reader who enjoys posting comments and recommendations about the books I read. You will not find a synopsis with my recommendations because you can just click on the book title for a link to www.goodreads.com for a synopsis and reviews by other readers. I prefer the 3 Reason format: the reason I chose to read it; the reason I liked (or disliked) the book; and the reason I recommend it.

Realm of Ice and Sky: Triumph, Tragedy, and History's Greatest Arctic RescueRealm of Ice and Sky: Triumph, Tragedy, and History's Greatest Arctic Rescue by Buddy Levy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I borrowed this book from my local library.
This book is exciting! Exciting non-fiction that is well-documented.
I read it because I will be cruising in the Canadian Arctic this summer and I have visited Tromso, a city where these explorers shipped their expedition supplies.

Beyond Anxiety: Curiosity, Creativity, and Finding Your Life's PurposeBeyond Anxiety: Curiosity, Creativity, and Finding Your Life's Purpose by Martha N. Beck
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I found this book at my local library after I listened to Podcast 310 0n the channel The Maximized Minimalist. I was interested in the curiosity and creativity sections of this book.
Hmmm, I wonder what you will think about this book.

The Waves Take You HomeThe Waves Take You Home by María Alejandra Barrios Vélez
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I downloaded this book when it was offered as a selection from Amazon's 2025 Read-The-World offer.
The author tells a story of a young woman who is struggling with grief and a deadline for a financial problem. I had to take a star away only because the magical-realism is too believable for some of the friends to whom I might recommend this book.

Secrets of Adulthood: Simple Truths for Our Complex LivesSecrets of Adulthood: Simple Truths for Our Complex Lives by Gretchen Rubin
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

My opinion is this author gives a better interview than the small amount of text in this book. It reminds me of being assigned a 176-page paper and not having enough content to fill it so there are often pages of blue to separate topics, there are often title pages with a blue line design, and quadruple-space your lines so that an aphorism may be considered by the reader.

I enjoyed the interview I heard on Podcast 309 of The Maximized Minimalist.
I borrowed the book from my local library.

Luck of the Draw (Betting on Romance, #1)Luck of the Draw by Cheri Allan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This e-book has been in My Digital Library since September 2, 2016.
The scene where a group of grandmothers play cards using photos of their grandchildren to ante up and make predictions was a different way to introduce the characters, and the reader will want to see how the author works this story.
I added a star to recommend it to other readers.

No Dawn for Men a Novel of Ian Fleming, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Nazi GermanyNo Dawn for Men a Novel of Ian Fleming, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Nazi Germany by James LePore
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This e-book has been in My Digital Library since June 2016.
It is a thriller with real and imagined history, and it only gets 3 stars because I am reluctant to recommend this category to my friends.

Attention Kmart Shoppers: The Rise and Fall of America's First Big DiscounterAttention Kmart Shoppers: The Rise and Fall of America's First Big Discounter by Ben Schultz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I purchased this Kindle edition when it was recommended by Goodreads.
I worked for Kmart from 1986 until 2004 as a pharmacist and a pharmacy department manager. I was naive because I believed I could make working for a corporation work for me, until I could not.
I appreciate knowing a bit more about the bankruptcy because I wished that Chuck Conaway could have been strung up based on the rumors that I heard at the time that we had a great holiday season so he gave himself and some others bonuses before paying vendors what was owed to them. There were a lot of people who worked hard and had faith that the different strategies tried during the bankruptcies would get us through tough times because so many of the Kmart workers were people who had been through tough times themselves. Then Eddie Lampert destroyed both Kmart and Sears.
