About Me

My photo
I'm a reader who enjoys posting comments and recommendations about the books I read. You will not find a synopsis with my recommendations because you can just click on the book title for a link to www.goodreads.com for a synopsis and reviews by other readers. I prefer the 3 Reason format: the reason I chose to read it; the reason I liked (or disliked) the book; and the reason I recommend it.

Small Great ThingsSmall Great Things by Jodi Picoult
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read this because it is my book club's August selection.
I look forward to the discussions this book will generate because I was sometimes uncomfortable for the characters in their conflicts. I have not been a fan of Picoult's writing style because I think she creates her characters to fit the story she wants to tell.

Nail's Crossing (Bill Maytubby & Hannah Bond Mystery #1)Nail's Crossing by Kris Lackey
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was the July 2019 Serial Reads selection from Barnes and Noble.
It was hard to tell if I did not like the pacing due to the author or because as a Serial Read I was limited to a chapter or two per day.

Rebellious Aging: A Self-help Guide for the Old Hippie at Heart (Old Hippie at Heart Self-help Series Book 1)Rebellious Aging: A Self-help Guide for the Old Hippie at Heart by Margaret Nash
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I borrowed this book through Amazon's "free with Prime" offer.
I would put this self-help book in the sub-category of "how I helped myself and it will probably work for you too."
I would recommend it for those readers who previously used the work Caroline Myss did with archetypes.

Two Years Before the Mast (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana Jr.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I'm not quite sure how long this ebook has been in my Nook library because it came as a starter offer of Barnes & Noble Classics. It remains an exciting adventure 179 years after Dana lived it. He writes so vividly I feel a chill while he has to beat the ice off the sails and he must not wear mittens for fear of losing his grip on the riggings. Barnes and Noble's ebook makes it more accessible for the modern reader by the easy link to footnotes that explain terms unfamiliar to me. There is a chapter that tells about Dana's visit to San Francisco on a steamship only 16 years after his work as a seaman and hide-drogher, and how changed its world had become.

There Once Were Stars (There Once Were Stars #1)There Once Were Stars by Melanie McFarlane
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I downloaded this ebook to my Nook library when it was free from Barnes and Noble in 2012.
It is a YA read and an origin story for a young woman who has completed her education and must start working at an assigned job. The author does a good job of world building this dystopian future and creating interesting characters.
There is one more book in this series.

The Secrets of Ivy GardenThe Secrets of Ivy Garden by Catherine Ferguson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This ebook has been in my Nook library since 2018 when I downloaded it for free. I could store it on the SD card in my Nook so that I may read it while on vacation without access to WIFI.
This book is entertaining, and it is full of interesting characters .
I recommend it to any reader who is looking for a mystery a character might uncover as she prepares her Grandmother's house to sell and her grandmother is no longer alive to answer questions.
