About Me

My photo
I'm a reader who enjoys posting comments and recommendations about the books I read. You will not find a synopsis with my recommendations because you can just click on the book title for a link to www.goodreads.com for a synopsis and reviews by other readers. I prefer the 3 Reason format: the reason I chose to read it; the reason I liked (or disliked) the book; and the reason I recommend it.

Past Tense (Jack Reacher, #23)Past Tense by Lee Child
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I borrowed this from my local library on Overdrive. I had some difficulty loading it on my Kindle but it worked fine on the Kindle app on my Nook.
I was disappointed in this book because the body count is high. I figured out the danger to Shorty and Patty before Child was finished building suspense to that reveal.
I recommend it only to Reacher fans who are intent on reading every last one of these books.

Whispered Lies (Web of Lies, #1)Whispered Lies by Kathleen Brooks
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I read this because it was Barnes and Noble's Serial Read in February. The reader unlocks a portion each day until the ebook is completed.
There was good action. It feels like an origin story for comic book heroes. I did not care enough to pay for more books in this series,

Dakota December (Dakota Series Book 4)Dakota December by Lauraine Snelling
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I mentioned before this author is the only one that my 92-year old father and I currently agree writes a good story with characters he respects because the characters are hard workers who build a community; hard workers who help those who need assistance; and Christians who are temperate. I enjoy the stories of pioneers in historical settings. I enjoy the romance in the story as it builds to a courtship.

The Indigo GirlThe Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book will be the selection for my book club's March meeting. It was recommended to our group by a member who suggests well-researched historical fiction.
The fictional part is the story and dialogue the author imagines from the historical facts of the life of Eliza Lucas that begins when she is 16-years old in colonial South Carolina in 1739. The section, "A Note From The Author" explains which characters were fiction and how she used historical facts to justify their creation. The Epilogue adds more about the later years of Eliza and two of her descendants.
Discussion questions are available at the end of the book or on the author's website. I recommend this book for other book clubs and readers who want to read about our colonial history. I consider it suitable for young adult readers who may need extra credit for an American history class.

Dakota Dusk (Dakota Plains #3)Dakota Dusk by Lauraine Snelling
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received this book as a Kindle matchbook because I purchased the Dakota series for my Dad's gift for his 92nd birthday. I am as entertained by Snelling's books as much as he is, and this author is the only one we both enjoy. While the books are set in a different state and in an earlier time than when he lived, the lives of these Dakota settlers remind him of living on a farm in rural Ohio where he was part of an extended family, a family who lived with the strong-willed grandmother who raised my father and his siblings after Dad's mother died shortly after childbirth of her fifth living child. Dad went to one-room township schoolhouses, and this book opened up some memories about the school teachers he had.
In the afterword, Snelling tells a story of how she was informed about a mistake she made in this book. The mistake does not keep it from being entertaining.

A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived: The Human Story Retold Through Our GenesA Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived: The Human Story Retold Through Our Genes by Adam Rutherford
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had to continue reading this ebook on Hoopla when it would no longer open on my Kindle.
I was interested in this topic and Rutherford explained it well. It is not rated higher because I often found the explanations too dense for my reading enjoyment as a hobbyist in genetic genealogy. In other words, he explained more than I wanted to know, and it was more than I was able to clearly understand or I could explain back to someone else in a quick conversation.
I have recommended it to other people who have an interest in genetic genealogy.

The Long RideThe Long Ride by Olin Thompson
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This ebook was free when I downloaded it to my Nook library in 2012.
I wanted to enjoy this book more than I did. Some formatting changes could have helped this reader from confusion. Chapter titles that indicated locations and years might have helped this reader distinguish the importance of the action in the scenes the author tried to create. Was this scene important to the story of Edgar Conroy, or Bill Dean, or Will Egan, or the Dutton gang?

They Almost Always Come HomeThey Almost Always Come Home by Cynthia Ruchti
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I downloaded this ebook from Barnes and Noble into my Nook library when it was free. I like the way the author plotted character growth in the story line.
There are questions in the back for discussion if this is used for a book club.

Drawing Nature for the Absolute BeginnerDrawing Nature for the Absolute Beginner by Mark Willenbrink
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I found this on sale at Hobby Lobby. I previously purchased another book by Willenbrink about watercolors.
The URL links at the bottom of the pages are not working in 2019. The URL for www.artistsnetwork.com works for other artists. There are 23 demonstrations for practice in this book but I felt there were some steps missing for an absolute beginner who is likely to need much more practice about hatching when the directions state, add values.

Dakota Dawn (Dakota Series Book 1)Dakota Dawn by Lauraine Snelling
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received this book as a Kindle Matchbook because I purchased the paperback version for my father's birthday. We both finished this book quickly because it was hard to leave at the end of a chapter.
I recommend it to all readers who enjoy the books about Snelling's immigrants to the Dakotas and Minnesota.

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of NantucketThe Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This ebook was free when I downloaded it from Barnes and Noble to my Nook library in 2012. I did not finish reading it until 2019.
Perhaps my disappointment in this novel was due to this novel being written in 1838, and literary style has changed so much in 181 years
