About Me

I'm a reader who enjoys posting comments and recommendations about the books I read. You will not find a synopsis with my recommendations because you can just click on the book title for a link to www.goodreads.com for a synopsis and reviews by other readers. I prefer the 3 Reason format: the reason I chose to read it; the reason I liked (or disliked) the book; and the reason I recommend it.

The Magnificent Grand Scene #1The Magnificent Grand Scene #1 by Cuvie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a Free Friday selection from Barnes and Noble, and my first Manga book in about 40 years.
I will recommend it to my granddaughters.

Better off Dead (Jack Reacher, #26)Better off Dead by Lee Child
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I am disappointed in this book, and I have been disappointed in the last few Reacher books due to the extremely high body counts.

The Man Who Played with Fire: Stieg Larsson's Lost Files and the Hunt for an AssassinThe Man Who Played with Fire: Stieg Larsson's Lost Files and the Hunt for an Assassin by Jan Stocklassa
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I liked the first 40% of the book as Stocklassa reviewed the archives of Larsson; and then Stocklassa went down a rabbit hole for 7 years as he tried to solve the assassination of Olof Palme.
My suggestion is to read the first 40%, and then the chapter titled, "Revolver" to finish with Stocklassa's theories.

The Amateur MarriageThe Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is one of those books that I must apologize to for having kept on my to-be-read shelf for too long.
A favorite quote is "Lots of things are unacceptable. That doesn't mean they don't happen."
This is a time capsule of a family from 1941 until the 60th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. It captures a time capsule for the generation of my parents.

Bishop to QueenBishop to Queen by Lexy Wolfe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed the first ebook in the series, Ravenhawk, which Barnes and Noble offered as a Serial Reads during August 2021, and I even purchased this sequel.
I enjoyed the themes explored in these two books as humanity and synths struggle to survive life with power based largely in corporations and government.

A Life Without Flowers (A Life Without, #2)A Life Without Flowers by Marci Bolden
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was available as an audiobook from Hoopla and my local library. I no longer prefer audiobooks as I no longer commute. I was eager to continue the story of Carol/Carorline and her relationship with her mother Judith and the buffer of her aunt on a RV road trip; but, I got bored of the format of the story with the flashbacks of Carol's memories before the end of the book.

Firestorm (Anna Pigeon, #4)Firestorm by Nevada Barr
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I went back to read some books from the beginning of the series that I am unsure if I read about 25 years ago. The topic seemed timely when I heard about wildfires in California and Oregon.
Yes, this is why I prefer early books in the Anna Pigeon series to most of the more recently printed.

Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and WorkDecisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work by Chip Heath
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was recommended during my Noom lessons, and my library had it available.
I like the summary at the end of each chapter; recommendations for further reading; clinics; overcoming obstacles, and endnotes. Its system uses the acronym WRAP: Widen your options; Reality-test Your Assumptions; Attain Distance before Deciding; Prepare to be wrong.

Deep Cover Jack (Hunt For Reacher #4)Deep Cover Jack by Diane Capri
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I borrowed from my public library on its Overdrive app, and returned as soon as I finished so next person may borrow. There is at least one other person who is trying to read these in order as I am.
I still enjoy the series but it is predictable.

Jack and Kill (Hunt For Reacher #1.2)Jack and Kill by Diane Capri
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

These novellas get a lower rating because, like this one, it really was not more than a chapter worth of material. The story ended at 88% of the book, and the rest is advertising fluff.

I can't believe I waited 2 weeks for an e-novella to be returned to the library. I read it in an afternoon.
I returned it same day for next person.

Dial A for AuntiesDial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this farce. I am hesitant to recommend it to some people who may think I am insensitive to a culture of which I do not belong. Yet I can say, well you do not know how annoying my family members are and yet will do what they can to protect me.

Across the Winding RiverAcross the Winding River by Aimie K. Runyan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This Kindle book has been in my Kindle library since July 5, 2020 when I downloaded it when it was free with Prime.
I do not like when Amazon immediately marks this selection in Goodreads as "Read" because I prefer to do it myself.
i enjoyed the book enough that I would recommend it to others.

Wicked River: The Mississippi When It Last Ran WildWicked River: The Mississippi When It Last Ran Wild by Lee Sandlin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In my library since my last trip on American Queen in 2016. I hoped to read it before a trip for the length of the Mississippi. My planned trip for July 2021 was cancelled due to CDC protocols. I am now rebooked on a trip on American Empress for this fall 2021 on a different river.

I enjoyed the history this book had to tell.
