About Me

My photo
I'm a reader who enjoys posting comments and recommendations about the books I read. You will not find a synopsis with my recommendations because you can just click on the book title for a link to www.goodreads.com for a synopsis and reviews by other readers. I prefer the 3 Reason format: the reason I chose to read it; the reason I liked (or disliked) the book; and the reason I recommend it.

Walking with SpringWalking with Spring by Earl V. Shaffer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoy books that take me along with the traveler. I especially enjoy books that take me along with a companion who does not whine. Sure, there was inclement weather and buzzing, biting insects; but Shaffer adapted and kept moving on his Long Cruise.
A favorite quote of mine: "...a reluctance to finish the trip was building up. I almost dreaded the time when the Long Cruise would be over. Trail-hiking had become my way of life. Civilization seemed like such a sham."
I highly recommend this book to all readers.

The Last Secret of the TempleThe Last Secret of the Temple by Paul Sussman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I downloaded this ebook to my Nook library when it was offered for free in 2012 from Barnes and Noble.
It is a suspenseful mystery set in the time in which it was written, and it feels topical and that there could be mysteries that a Palestinian, an Israeli Jew, and an Egyptian Arab might be solving that come together in the end. At first, I had difficulty keeping names straight because these names are not with what I am familiar.
A reader of mysteries may enjoy this.

Fletch (Fletch, #1)Fletch by Gregory McDonald
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fletch was the Serial Read for May 2019 from Barnes and Noble. A chapter or two is released each day, and then you have to the end of the month to finish your reading.
I enjoyed this 1974 book, even if parts seems dated, there are more parts that seem relevant as Fletch investigates how opiates and heroin are coming into The Beach. I remember the 1985 movie with Chevy Chase as Fletch.
I recommend it to readers who enjoy a well-crafted mystery.

Sketching People: An Urban Sketcher's Manual to Drawing Figures and FacesSketching People: An Urban Sketcher's Manual to Drawing Figures and Faces by Lynne Chapman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I bought this book because I completed two courses by this author on Craftsy.com (now Bluprint.com.) I suspected she had much more to teach me.
Art instruction books are aspirational reading for me. This author has so many ideas for practice on each page that sometimes I do not know where to start first. I will add 3 Inktense watercolor pencils in tan, olive, and navy to my sketch kit because I liked how she used those ( P. 28 and 116.)
I recommend this for ideas for practice for any sketcher.

Lonely Planet Cruise Ports Scandinavia  Northern EuropeLonely Planet Cruise Ports Scandinavia  Northern Europe by Lonely Planet
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lonely Planet is an excellent guide, and I tear it apart to keep the information about the 5 port cities our cruise will visit. I was disappointed there was not enough information for each of the ports in Norway that our cruise will visit.

A Most Excellent LoveA Most Excellent Love by Charles McQuaig
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this memoir of a woman who lived from 1869-1954. It was published by her great-grandson who adds a List of Characters and Timeline.
I recommend it to any reader who enjoys family history and who enjoys genealogy as a hobby.

The American Agent (Maisie Dobbs, #15)The American Agent by Jacqueline Winspear
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoy this series by Winspear so much that I eagerly anticipate each new release. I like these continuing characters so much that I really empathize with the wartime struggles they must endure on the homefront.
I highly recommend this series to all readers.

The Heart of Thornton Creek (Queensland Chronicles #1)The Heart of Thornton Creek by Bonnie Leon
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This ebook was downloaded to my Nook library in 2012 when Barnes and Noble offered it for free. I previously read two other books by Bonnie Leon, and I liked this one the least.
I know there is an audience of readers who want to be preached at while reading Christian fiction; I'm just not one who does.
